Richard is a hybrid of content and commercial expertise. He was a researcher on the BBC Radio 4 flagship news programme, Today, in 1994 when the editor asked if we should do something with this ‘information superhighway’ and Richard enthusiastically went to work on his first professional site.
As Head of Digital for Manchester City FC, he transformed the club’s digital profile and business opportunity in 2011. He was named “Digital Individual of the Year” in the DADI awards (has not heard the end of it since) and won some other awards with the MCFC team, including the digital Sports Industry Award. He’s also proud to have helped Channel 4 with their digital coverage of Paralympics 2012.
What’s a typical day for you at Seven League?
Long and rewarding.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Realising I’ve hired people who are better than me so I get to keep on learning.
Favourite future tech?
Voice recognition. The software is pretty good now, but it’s going to get a lot better and, combined with machine learning, will make a big difference to my/our lives.
Brief Encounter. Favourite sport film: Tin Cup.
Favourite arcade game?
Afterburner – first hydraulic game in London’s Trocadero in 1988. Great immersive experience.
Sports positions played?
Cricket off spinner / No.6 batsman / second slip. I was a second row when everyone was a bit smaller. Now golfing, shooting, scuba diving.
I wish I’d… invested in all the start-ups that went on to a successful IPO.
